Ligaments: Make sure you have no ligament damage to the outside of the ankle. An MRI can help in diagnosing this. Stay off of it if it is painful to walk on it. See you local podiatrist if pain persists.

Ankle sprain: Ankle sprains are graded depending on the severity. RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) are needed. Once this improves, rehab exercises are needed.
