Depends on cause: It really depends on what happened. The best way to find out is with MRI. Ultrasound of the veins to make sure no post traumatic DVT is also necessary. Joint fluid and tendon or ligament damage can then be seen

Simple ankle sprains: usually take 6-8 weeks to heal and that is if patients are in their brace or cast for the appropriate time and following all doctors orders. Take it easy and if you are concerned get a follow up with your doc in a couple weeks. Best wishes!
