Knee (cap) arthritis: You could have knee arthritis or a knee cap tracking problem. Stretching and anti-inflammatories, and particularly quad strengthening/wt. training exercises. If this doesn't help, then I think he need an examination by an orthopedic doctor & XR.

Ice.: Ice your knee after you ride and stretch all lower extremity muscle groups before and after your ride. You can take an over the counter anti-inflammatory medication as well.
