Pain history?: If you take pain medication already, a PCA may be needed to help assess how much new pain you are in. However, a patient staying only one night is unlikely to get a PCA without a pain history. Once a PCA is started, it takes time to transition to pain medication by mouth. That being said, if you are not on pain medication every day to start, you will likely get hydrocodone or oxycodone.
