Yes and no: Some of the most painful sore throats are caused by viruses, like the mono virus.And these have no response to antibiotics. Gargle with some salty water and you can remove some of the debris and maybe feel better for a while.Ibuprofen also helps.

It is possible for: Streptococcus Group A to cause a sore throat and fever with findings of redness without pus. It is also possible to be a carrier of "strep" & have a viral sore throat & fever. Your doctor is wise to await throat culture results, especially if Rapid-Strep test was negative, so as not to give you unnecessary antibiotics.
