Ligaments: The mainstay of treatment is to rest the foot so that healing can take place - if its not possible for you to walk then yes you should be using crutches for a short while.

Start ASAP.: Good thinking. You should also start the RICE protocol. Rest, ice, compression and elevation. If it hurts, then restrict your activity. A cam walker boot, with pneumatic compression capability works great. Ultimately, you might need to have your foot evaluated for the existence of more involved injuries.
