Rarely happens: You misunderstand something you were told or maybe you read online. Dysplasia (abnormal cells detected by pap smear) can show up as soon as 2-3 months, or 10 years later. Cancer takes even longer, usually 10+ years, often 20 or more. It is possible an HPV infection to progress to cancer in a year, but very rare. When it happens, there is no known cause, just bad luck.
