It depends on....: The type of symptoms and finding on physical examination can give a clue to the cause of this lump. Since it is tender, it may be due to skin infection(a boil). In this case the skin on the surface may be read and warm to touch. If it is hard and not much tender it could be something more chronic. Either way you should show it to your doctor unless it starts to settle down and resolves within 1 wk
