Erosive esophagitis: The presence of erosions in the esophagus is a sign that your GERD is fairly severe. Certainly you should take a PPI at least until the erosions are healed and your symptoms are under good control. After that, some patients can go off of them, particularly if they follow anti-reflux measures assiduously. Many patients do end up requiring long-term medication, however. Good luck.
