Effusion: Fluid in the middle ear space (effusion) interferes with the normal movement of the eardrum, necessary for us to hear properly. The usual course of action is to treat the effusion, and when the fluid has cleared, repeat the hearing screen. If he continues to fail the screen, formal audiology should be performed.
