Healthtap.com: Up until the 1970's doctors billed patients. Around that time regulations changed to allow businesses to contract directly with patient's and to threaten doctors with taking their patients away if they did not take the insurance company deal. Now doctors are racing to keep up with diminished remuneration and the need to see a certain number of patients in order to cover overhead costs.
