Shingles?: If limited to one side of your head -- i.e. not crossing the midline of your scalp (except slightly) -- this could be early symptoms of herpes zoster (shingles). Look for blisters, red bumps, etc in the painful area. Even without the rash, shingles is possible ("zoster sin herpete"). See your doctor ASAP; herpes zoster treatment is by far most effective the earlier it is started.

Cause?: I wonder if the source is in the ear and not the scalp. Sometimes the source can be from the ear such as TMJ syndrome and might cause such pain. Other issues within the ear can cause the problem as well. See your primary care doc or ENT
