A member asked:

Why does consuming large amounts of sodium make you thirsty?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Electrolyte balance: Sodium and water are in a state of balance within our body. Too much sodium intake increases the concentration of sodium, which triggers the body's osmostat, and that in turn triggers the thirst mechanism to increase water intake and reestablish the balance. Also, the kidneys get rid of the excess sodium, but they can't do so without also getting rid of some water.
