A member asked:

I was given sodium chloride 0.9% 1000ml bag of fluids at er today before blood test came back. suspected dehydration bc palpitations. test came back sodium was 140 and chloride 107 before fluids. is this going to mess me up? i am extremely thirsty?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Dehydration: Normal saline is 0.9% sodium chloride and is safe to give through an IV; the fluid is "normal" or equal to the circulating fluids in your cardiovascular system. This will improve your circulation. The values you mentioned are normal levels and should not be affected by the fluids given. Thirst is a sign you need to drink water along with a soft bland diet until you can followup with your doctor.
