At diagnosis CML: Patients can have anemia. More commonly they experience anemia in the first 6-8 weeks of treatment with the tyrosine kinase inhibitors like gleevec (imatinib).

Bone marrow: CML is a cancer and if affects the bone marrow and blood is made in the bone marrow, advanced CML destroys normal bone marrow and causes anemia as well as reduction in other blood cells.

May not be CML: Although CML is a marrow cancer and suppresses red cells, CML is also often very manageable today and the anemia may well be from something else.
