Xray for answer: A simple Xray would determine whether or not you have a fracture at the base of the swollen thumb. Direct palpation (squeezing) of the bone suspected to be fractured is also a great clinical way to determine presence of a fracture. gently squeeze injured bone in a grid type fashion with opposing thumb and index finger. If sudden increase in specific point pain-- highly suspicious for fracture.
