A member asked:

How long can an iv stay in, not using it, its a back up iv in foot

A doctor has provided 1 answer

72 hours: generally, peripheral IVs should be replaced after a maximum of 72 hours. The risk of infection, bleeding, dislodgement, and damage to the vein increases after that. It may have to be replaced sooner though, particularly in the foot.
