One and Dome.: There is a multitude of reasons why ingrown toenails occur. The most common being injury, improper cutting, infection and aging. Regardless of the cause, the problem can be treated easily in the office. A small match stick size piece of nail is removed and the nail root treated to prevent any further growth of that piece of nail. It works great. I performed this on my own nail and no problems.

See your podiatrist: If the ingrown toenail has an odor there is a likely infection caused by the offending portion of nail. This is called a paronychia. It is important to remove that offending border to calm down the infection. It would be best to see your podiatrist to have the ingrown portion removed. Once the infection is gone you can choose to have a permanent procedure performed to prevent recurrence.
