Cystic kidneys: Sounds like either ARPKD ( Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease) or renal dysplasia due to obstructive uropathy. Both these conditions are compatible with life depending upon fetal lung maturity. Believe it or not-- you need normal kidneys for lungsto develop in utero. In any case my best advice to you would be to consult with a Pediatric Nephrologist, before the birth of the baby.

Evaluation at birth: The OB doctor can follow the infant before birth. A neonatologist needs to evaluate the kidneys after birth sonogram of the kidneys afterbirth is much more accurate. If the neonatologist is concerned a referral can be made to a pediatric urologist for further evaluation. At this point is a wait and see period. Don't assume that surgery is necessary.
