Not necessarily: The renal pelves are normally checked during a fetal survey. On occasion the the renal pelvis may contain urine making it visible on sonogram. When visible it can be measured. When the measurements are larger than expected, usually a sonogram with a perinatologist is done. They will advise the patient on what followup, if any is needed.

Not sure: exactly what is being measured. The renal pelvis or the transverse diameter of the kidney itself? Do you have more details?
