Not a must: Swaddling is not a must for a baby but most parents will choose to swaddle their infant for 2-4 weeks for the comfort of the infant. This close feeling can help with fussiness or sleeping.

Temporary at most: Swaddling is a way to get a new baby to settle because they are used to the confinement of a tight womb. When born, they are initially surprised/bothered by the random movement of their arms and legs when given more space. As they adapt to this freedom, swaddling should stop, the sooner the better. When babies are capable of more movement, they can twist in the bedding and suffocate.
