Chronic ankle pain: Chronic pain following a bad ankle sprain can be caused by too much scar tissue, a ruptured ligament that did not heal correctly, or cartilage defects (arthritis or a loose body). You should see a podiatrist, who will take x rays and may send you for an MRI to get to the bottom of it.

Talk to Orthopedics: This could be a matter as simple as changing to orthotic foot wear, or stopping using certain shows. Easiest way i to talk to an orthopedic surgeon or a podiatrist on the correct treatment. It should not need surgery at this time.
