Why Infected?: You do not describe why you feel your burn is infected. Burns are usually sterile if kept dry, clean and covered. If the area is just red, it will not infect. To find out the organism in a wound the doctor takes a swab of the area with a sterile culture swab and sends it to a lab to ID the organism.

Wound culture: Just keep in mind that a wound culture of a burn wound will almost always have some growth but the challenge is determine if it's a true infection or just surface colonization - and if it's affecting the wound healing process.

Culture the open bur: The way to obtain which bacterial organism is effecting your open burn wound would be doing a Q-tip swab of the area placing into a sterile container. Than have a lab plate it for culture and sensitivity. This can/could be done at your doctors office, Urgent Care.

Get a culture: if you are worried about an infection get a culture. YOur docor can order one or your physician can swab it and send it to the lab. If positive the lab will determine which antibiotic is appropriate.
