Safe than sorry: Since you don't know what your new partner's HIV status is, would you simply rely on words from someone you have barely known or would you want to have a more certain answer ? Do realize that most of the HIV test do not become positive until 3-4 months later. Better yet, ask your partner to provide the test result.
