May be options: "Steroid sparing" immunomodulatory drugs exist and should be substituted for prednisone whenever possible. Discuss with your eye doctor or neurologist. The alternative medications have many potential side effects as well, but I am surprised you haven't been presented with options before. Consider a consult on HealthTap to relay more info about your inflammatory disease and for 2nd opinion.

Need to review: This with ideally a neuro-opthalmologist. For some inflammatory issues you may be able to utilize steroid sparing agents like methotrexate or azathioprine but this decision requires someone who is very familiar with your condition and is working with you to inform you of all possible treatment options.
