A member asked:

Why mchc is low in iron deficiency anemia but normal in pernicious anemia?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

MCHC: MCHC=mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration This value is a calculated value of hemoglobin per red cell. In iron deficiency the body has difficulty making enough hemoglobin, and the resultant cells are both small and low on hgb. The defect with PA is not with hgb synthesis but with cell replication and nuclear maturation, so the amount of hgb/cell is unaffected.
