Liver function tests: ALT and AST are liver function tests. Among possible causes for elevations are medications, alcohol use, and liver disease, including hepatitis. Your doctor may order additional tests to evaluate this finding. Sometimes, a healthy person can have test results outside the reference range, so your doctor will interpret these results in context of your overall health
