Sleep Regulation: Sleep Regulation is tricky for those who work nights. You are fighting the normal diurnal sleep rhythms. It is worse for those who shift between day and night work regularly -- ask any physician in training! However, if you are working nights continuously, you can "train" or "reset" you rhythms by 1) setting a STRICT 7-8 hr sleep schedule 2) avoiding any daylight with a completely DARK bedroom

No: There is no real alternative to sleep. He will need to organize his time to still get 6-8 hours sleep - difficult to do with his work hours. It seems his complaint though is not the problem of staying asleep in daylight, but rather having to sleep in daytime at all. He may need to get a "day job".
