Not in place of food: A multivitamin in itself is not bad for you. The problem is that people often try to replace nutrients from food with vitamins. They are not the same. The goal is to get as much of your daily needs met by what you eat. Since this is not always possible, daily multivitamins can help. But it is dangerous to self administer large doses of any vitamin or mineral because toxicity can occur.

Very helpful to take: A healthy diet is the foundation of health and taking a mulitivit. is not a substitute, but the vast majority of Americans are deficient in vitamins and minerals. There is also strong evidence that levels about the RDA can prevent illness. I advise a quality multivitamin/mineral supplement for everyone and also at least 5000 iu of Vit D3 in fall and winter months. See http://tinyurl.com/mzrkbx8
