Is it possible to refuse medication for bipolar disorder?

You can...but?: It is your life, your body. If you go to a respected psychiatrist who recommends meds you have a choice. You could go for a second opinion. You could try different psychotherapeutic techniques. It depends upon how crippling the condition is to you. But you always have the choice of refusing treatment.

Yes, but...: Generally speaking, unless a person is a subject of court-ordered mental health treatment, a person can refuse any treatment modality for any physical/psychological condition. However, worth keeping in mind that bipolar disorder is usually difficult to manage adequately without meds and inadequately managed bipolar d/o can have pretty serious consequences.
