A 37-year-old female asked:
what does an elevated gloublin of 4.2 mean?? (normal range is 2.0-4.0) albumin normal at 3.9 (normal range is 3.5-5.0).

Many possibilities..: First, you should know that it's only mildly elevated, and a true diagnosis requires further testing and a more complete history and physical. But the differential diagnosis for "high serum globulin" is: leukemia, lupus, collagen diseases, syphilis, waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, liver disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, carcinoid syndrome, kidney disease, or chronic infection.

I should say that Dr. Lykins is probably right. The problem is, without more information, we can't make a definite diagnosis. I gave you the "differential diagnosis," meaning ALL of the things a high globulin could be. But, when it's just slightly above normal, it's probably just a variant of normal. Just discuss it in more detail with your provider.

Probably nothing: This is such a minor elevation, it probably just means you were fighting off a cold or minor infection and the antibodies in your immune system (which are made of globulins) were slightly elevated when you took this test. I would repeat it when you are feeling completely well, and if it is still elevated, discuss further testing with your doctor.

Yes: Albumin in urine represents kidney disease and needs to be addressed as intervention may prevent further damage. Please consult with your doctor as all lab findings need to be interpreted in the context of the clinical situation.

A protein: Albumins are proteins which dissolve in water and are not covered with chains of sugars. The most common is serum albumin. These molecules transport other molecules which don't dissolve in water very well. But its main function is to regulate the amount of water in the blood. Another type of Albumin is the protein in egg whites.

A 33-year-old female asked:
What is the definition of glycosylated albumin and why would it be important for my health?

Dr. Steve Choi answered

Glycemic control: Hemoglobin and serum albumin undergo glycosylation ie. binds with glucose. Glycosylated hemoglobin level (HbA1) is widely used as index of glycemic control in diabetic patients but due to long survival time of erythrocytes (120 days), it remains elevated for several weeks after improved control. Glycosylated serum albumin (GSA) has a shorter half-life (20 days) so it can detect changes earlier

A 46-year-old male asked:
Past 7 physicals Globulin was 3.2/2.5/2.2/2.3/2.2/2.0/1.8. Albumin 4.3/4.7/4.4/4.7/4.4/4.3/4.5. So ratio has risen. Should I be Globulin is dropping?

Stop worrying: These things fluctuate. Meeting a virus that may not even make you sick will up the globulin and down the albumin a bit.
