Pursue other options: Insomnia can be very disabling largely due to daytime sleepiness, irritability, depression, anxiety, difficulty focusing, etc. It is likely making your anxiety worse. Xanax (alprazolam) is VERY addicting and can be lethal mixed with alcohol. Educate yourself about good sleeping habits, pursue relaxation techniques, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, see sleep foundation.org. Consider seeing a sleep specialist.

Try to stop drinking: Alcohol, although it may SEEM like it helps you sleep, actually disrupts your sleep cycle and can severely worsen insomnia. Rather than adding another chemical to your system (xanax), try removing the one that may be causing the problem (alcohol). Speak with your PCP about programs in your area that can help you. You can check out www.alcoholabusehotline.com, too. Good luck!

First get evaluation: Insomnia is a symptom . I would suggest that your approach should be to get a mental health evaluation that looks at the big picture which would include a look at your drinking.. Treatment with Xanax (alprazolam) which is a short acting tranquilizer is not necessarily the first choice for anxiety. It may be that some form of therapy possibly with medication will be recommended.
