Eustachian Tube Prob: The eustachian tube is a structure inside of the head that functions to regulate pressure in the middle ear space. Blockage or collapse of this tube by conditions such as nasal congestion can create a type of vaccuum which interferes with the tympanic membrane's ability to move properly.

Air loss: The middle ear space must be filled with air for the drum to move. In the floor of the space is a tube that drains accumulating mucus into the throat & allows air to pass into the space. If that Eustachian tube is swollen or otherwise blocked, no mucus move out or air moves in. That is common with small infants (tiny tube), colds or allergy. While not an infection, it can predispose to them.
