A member asked:

I have been taking magnesium glycinate for ibs-c, anxiety and high cholesterol. is there any proof it can help treat any of these?

Gycinate: This mineral supplement is used to prevent and treat low magnesium in the blood. Usually, a well-balanced diet provides normal blood levels of magnesium. There is no conclusive evidence that this has any effect on cholesterol levels or anxiety.

No: there is no proof that this works for any medical problem. Magnesium is a laxative so you may notice improvement in the IBS. However, it is not good to use magnesium on a regular basis for constipation as a first-line therapy. There is the possibility of developing increased magnesium levels, which can be dangerous. Initially you should increase fiber in your diet and your fluid intake. Good luck.
