Can a gross edema result in an amputation?

Yes: Untreated edema leads to skin break down and infection which can lead to amputations. Chronic infections plug up the leg's drainage system, the lymphatics, which can lead to an increase in edema, uncontrolled swelling, more infections and a vicious cycle of tissue injury.
