Depends on your an--: Esthetist, your surgery (upper or lower extremity) and your medical status. The anestetist will examine anddecide whats best for you. For upper extremity generally a general a is used, while for lower extremity, a spinal or general a maybe used.

Options exist: Depends on which part of the body needs to be amputated. For a toe amp, local anes w/ sedation may be adequate. Spinal or epidural anesthesia may be used for leg operations. If inadequate circulation of blood to the leg is the problem, and blood thinners are being used, then spinal or epidural can't be used because of risk of bleeding. General anesthesia is always possible.
