A member asked:

Got to have a spinal tap to check levels of pressure but have a huge needle phobia and panic when around them. is it possible to be sedated or under general anaesthetic during the procedure?

Sedation yes: There are too many risks of general anesthesia to recommend it for a spinal tap. Plus, it would be hard to reposition you if you're unconscious. But, of course, sedation is perfectly acceptable. Don't feel embarrassed about asking for it. I, as well, hate the sharp end of the needle!

CBT: Seek a cognitive-behavioral therapist who specializes in phobias. One method they use is systematic desensitization which slowly and incrementally brings the person closer and closer to the thing they are afraid of in slow, graduated steps that help make the anxiety more tolerable.

Spinal tap: is an invasive outpatient procedure and you may be given a sedative to make you drowsy and relaxed. Ask your doctor about conscious IV sedation.

Tough one..: although it would be possible in theory, to conduct general anesthesia or sedation safely one often needs an intravenous line, i.e. more needle sticks.. Spending time with your doctor and discussing possible use of oral anti-anxiety medicine might be helpful.. Good luck
