A member asked:

Is 80mg/kg/day amoxicillin too high for a 35lbs 3yo kid to treat strep throat? i read 20-50mg/kg/day is the usual, wondering if mistake made on rx.

Dose is OK: This dose is OK - doses as high as 110mg/kg have been used in some cases. It is likely for strep that the 50mg/kg dose would be sufficient - but it is OK to take the 80mg/kg dose.

No: Although the doc may have just written what s/he usually does for an ear infection, there is no problem with this dosage. Strep is killed relatively easier by this med than some of the germs of otitis, but the extra in no way hurts the kid.
