Empty gest. sac: A blighted ovum happens when a fertilized egg implants into the uterine lining, but the embryo does not develop. A diagnosis is usually not made when an ultrasound shows either an empty womb or an empty gestational sac. Your doctor should be able to answer this question for you. There is usually a high level of chromosome abnormalities which causes a woman’s body to naturally miscarry.
