Some possible causes: I think this could be a sty or a small area of irritation if it is on the lid itself. If you have any drainage, redness of the eye, eye pain, flashes of light, I think you should consult with an opthalmologist. Vision screening charts are available online and can be printed. This way you can test your vision by standing at a given distance from the chart.
