A member asked:

I have got early diabetic maculopathy in my eyes, and because my vision is great, and the there is no swelling at present, there is no need for treatment. however, i am terrified, will i go blind in the future? how likely is this?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in the US. Usually swelling in the center of the retina "macular edema" is responsible. If you control your diabetes (HgbA1c) and follow up with a retina specialist to monitor your retinopathy and treat (these days with anti-VEGF meds) appropriately, most patients see well their entire lives.
