How is nighttime?: I'm most suspicious, given your age & teenagers' reputations for suboptimal sleep hygiene(!), that you are not getting enough restful/restorative sleep at night, so that if you fall asleep in the afternoon, you go into very deep stages of sleep that are difficult to awaken from. I would start by improving nighttime sleep: establish consistent bedtime(!), no distractions(phone, etc), avoid caffeine.
