Melatonin, a hormone: produced by the pineal gland of the brain, increases in the dark & decreases in daylight. Melatonin supplements taken 30 minutes- 1 hour before desired bedtime + consistent sleep hygiene may help delayed- sleep- onset insomnia. After a GP rules out medical & psychiatric causes of insomnia, an adult can take 5-6 mg. of a reliable brand for 3 months, then reduce the dose by 1 mg./month till gone.
