Not necessarily: Depends on the type of hernia but physical examination by an experienced surgeon is usually sufficient. CT Scan can be helpful in questionable cases. US can help identify a hernia but I would not trust it to exclude a hernia.

No: Ultrasound can help diagnose a hernia, but can easily miss one. The technique is very dependent on the person doing the exam, but even in the best of hands, it can still miss small hernias. It also depends on the location of the hernia. Best to see a surgeon interested and experienced in hernia repair for a consultation. Hope this helps!
