Not necessarily: Depends on the type of hernia but physical examination by an experienced surgeon is usually sufficient. CT Scan can be helpful in questionable cases. US can help identify a hernia but I would not trust it to exclude a hernia.

No: Ultrasound can help diagnose a hernia, but can easily miss one. The technique is very dependent on the person doing the exam, but even in the best of hands, it can still miss small hernias.
