A member asked:

Why are our heart and lungs protected by our rib cage, but the other organs are not?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Ribs: ribs not only protect the heart and lungs but they're needed to create a rigid walled space so that movement of the diaphragm can cause the lungs to fill with air rather than just letting the chest collapse with no air entering the lungs. Plus you can live longer without belly organs than you can without chest organs.
