Chest wall: One of the main functions of the chest wall (and its bones, cartilage and muscles) is to protect the heart and other internal organs. That being said, being struck square in the chest--i.e., by a steering wheel, handlebars, baseball, etc.--carries a risk of trauma to the heart, depending on the strength of the force exerted.
