Ectopic pregnancy: At 8 weeks, the fetus should be seen at either transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasound with heart activity. Since no fetus was seen the options are an early pregnancy of say 5 weeks (dates not consistent), spontaneous abortion or tubal (ectopic) pregnancy.
