Lymph nodes: If swollen lymph node is related to an acute infection, it will be painful. However in chronic infections, like tuberculosis, syphillis-it can be painless. The consistency varies- it could be rubbery, firm- but when abscess starts to develop/ contains pus- the swollen lymph gland can be soft and fluctuant. Ddx in your case-would be process n the ear or around the ear or other area in the head/neck.
