Depends: Must have been a serious injury to cause that much damage. Not all ligament tears need surgery, but if needed ligament repairs should be done early rather than late. Sounds like you should see a hand surgeon to get things checked out. Maybe even a second opinion. Ligament repair surgery of the wrist is quite involved with a minimum of 3-4 month recovery.

Which ligaments?: Which ligaments were injured? It sounds like you need a minimum of a splint, but possiblly a cast or surgery (if conservative treatment fails or major stabalizer is damaged). Ot or pt also may be necessary. I would recommend you consult an orthopedic hand surgeon. In the meanwhile, rest, ice, compression, and elevation are key.
