Awkward Position: During sleep sounds like the culprit here. Or: unusually vigorous physical exercise earlier in the day, involuntary movements during sleep, poor head support....Mechanical issues that are easy to avoid. Persistent neck pain upon awakening would require more attention and discussion with a therapist or md.

It will get better: This is a common complaint. Not clear about what causes this, over use, viral illness, unusual sleeping position. It is due to a muscle strain or inflammation causing the neck muscle to spasm. Heat, rest, by llying down, nsaid's medication. Will last 3-5 days. If it persists beyond that see your doctor.
